New World Group and the UNICEF today jointly announced the implementation of the “Create a New World for Children” enterprise charity partner program, with a view to improving the conditions of Mainland China children in survival, protection and growth, etc. China’s “Girls Education Project” would be the first priority of the supports provided by the program.
The two institutions, together with several business units subordinated to the New World Group, will hold a series of fund-raising and promotion events in Hong Kong and Mainland China within the planned period (from September 1, 2003 to August 31, 2005). The participating business units of New World Group are engaged in real estate, hotel, service, telecommunications, and retail, etc., and they will closely cooperate with the Hong Kong Office of the UNICEF to jointly realize the goal of raising the fund of 10 million HK dollars for children of Mainland China. (See the supports of group members subordinated to New World Group in the attached materials)
“New World Group’s businesses are closely related to people’s livelihood, so we will, in the spirit of ‘From the Community and For the Community’, surely set up the strategic charity plan to support the vulnerable groups to step on the new course of life,” said Dr. Zheng Yutong, Chairman of New World Group. “The UNICEF is committed to improving and safeguarding disadvantaged children in survival, development, and benefit, and their belief that the education is important to the future of children is perfectly matched with the Group’s goal.”
JP Anson Chan of the UNICEF Hong Kong Office recognized the importance of education towards children, and held that “every person shall enjoy the opportunity of fairly receiving education. In the Mainland China, however, there are still millions of girls losing the opportunity of schooling due to poverty; coupled with the traditional concept of treating woman as inferior to men, the situation of girls’ dropouts is becoming increasingly serious. Therefore, it is hoped that their education conditions can be improved through various fund-raising activities.”
The program’s first large-sized fund-raising event, “Walk a New World for Children” charity walk is to be held on September 28, 2003 (Sunday). For expressing great support to this significant event, New World China Land has donated 700,000 HK dollars to the UNICEF Hong Kong Office.
The fund-raising event takes the route from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, and is the first cross-border fund-raising event between Mainland and Hong Kong in which thousands of people walk from SHA TAU KOK to Shenzhen. Ms. Kelly Chen and Mr. Daniel Chan, the two ambassadors of the UNICEF Hong Kong Office, will attend the walk fund-raising event in person. All funds raised will be used for supporting the “Girls Education Project” to increase the opportunities of schooling of Mainland China girls, and thereby improving their lives.
