Recently, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region has been hit by continuous heavy rainfall brought by Typhoon “Du Su Rui” and suffered from serious casualties and property losses. On August 9, Dr. Cheng Kar-Shun, Chairman of New World Development Company Limited and Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited, donated RMB 20 million in his own name to China Charity Federation to support disaster relief efforts in the region.
Dr. Cheng said: “ ‘When difficulties arise in one place, aid comes from all directions.’ The disaster in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region has deeply concerned every member of our group. We Hong Kong compatriots hope to work with the whole nation to support affected areas in recovering production and returning to normal life, and in rebuilding the homes of people affected by the disaster.”
Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R. and the China Charity Federation expressed their gratitude for Dr. Cheng’s good deeds. They also appreciated his high sense of social responsibility and deep friendship with the disaster-stricken people in the mainland.

In 2021, when Henan was hit by torrential rain, New World Development Company Limited, together with Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited, made an RMB 20 million donation ahead of most other Hong Kong companies. Since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020, the company has been the first Hong Kong company to donate money to the mainland, which accumulatively donated more than RMB 32 million together with Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited for the mainland’s epidemic control. Following the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the Cheng family made over RMB 50 million of cash donations and donated wireless video communication devices worth RMB 15 million to frontline rescue teams.
In 2016, Dr. Cheng donated RMB 300 million to the special fund for cyber security of China Internet Development Foundation (CIDF) to support training of network security professionals. In 2017, Chow Tai Fook Charity Foundation donated RMB 20 million to China Science and Technology Development Foundation to support science education for youth. In April 2022, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group donated RMB 120 million to Beijing Sport University Education Foundation to set up the Cheng Kar-Shun Champion Development Foundation, aiming to support the establishment of a sport training system for young people, promote sportsmanship, and contribute to national athletic development. In the same month, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group joined hands with the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League of China and the Shenzhen Youth Development Foundation in initiating and establishing the Shenzhen Youth Development Foundation - Cheng Kar-Shun Special Fund for Youth Development.
